Day 20 Ucluelet, near Tofino......we made it

6,968 km travelled

Well, we have made it to Tofino, the most westerly point of our Venture West.

We had a phone call from Evan's daughter who was getting worried about us as we were not able to post for a few days .... thanks Leigh.

We left our Tubby in Nanaimo and took only overnight essentials with us today. We were joined by other members of the Venture forum group (Kerry (Sailer), Janet and Paul (Rocket)) and we rode from Nanaimo to Port Alberni where we had a delightful seafood lunch. I devoured a piece of fisherman's bread which I can best describe as being comparable to beaver tails that are sold on the Rideau Canal during Winterlude. Kerry and Janet left us in Port Alberni to return to Salt Spring Island and Paul travelled with us to Tofino.

We stopped at one visitor centre which was located at the edge of  a large grove of extremely tall trees. I walked a few feet into the grove and was struck with awe at the serenity and beauty of the trees with the sun shining overhead.

On the drive into Tofino, memories of the Japanese tsunami were brought back to us as we saw various signs for "extreme wave" warning, tsunami danger zone, and tsunami evacuation route.

I had expected Tofino to be similar to Wasaga Beach or similar beach in Ontario in terms of people everywhere and lots of noise. But, it was otherwise - it was more raw beauty. At one point, we saw a young woman on a skateboard holding a surf board over her head. Oh...to be young and carefree.

Tomorrow, we will search for a beach where I can put my feet into the Pacific Ocean.

And then, we turn east for home.
regards to all,
Anne
